About Penwhaupell
Penwhaupell is a sparsely populated rural locality in Queensland's North Burnett Region, situated approximately 140 kilometres northwest of Gympie and 312 kilometres north-northwest of Brisbane. Covering around 85 square kilometres of mixed farming and bushland, the locality recorded no or negligible population in the 2021 Census. Its unusual name is believed to derive from Scottish origins, reflecting the heritage of early pastoral settlers in the region.
The North Burnett Region surrounding Penwhaupell is characterised by broadacre farming, cattle grazing, and a strong rural community centred on nearby towns such as Gayndah (about 27 km northwest) and Biggenden. Residents value the peaceful, wide-open countryside, and the region is known for citrus and stone fruit orchards, beef cattle, and some of Queensland's most authentic rural character. Essential services are accessed via Gayndah or Monto.
Penwhaupell falls under postcode 4625 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Callide electorate.
