About Pialligo
Pialligo is a small rural locality situated approximately 8 kilometres east of Canberra's city centre, nestled between the suburbs of Fyshwick and Majura and bordered by the Molonglo River. Gazetted in 1928, its name is believed to be of Aboriginal origin and was in use for the area from at least the early 1800s. With a population of just 138 residents, Pialligo retains a distinctly rural character uncommon for a locality so close to the Australian capital. The area covers around 8.3 square kilometres of flat agricultural land at an elevation of 571 metres.
Pialligo is best known for its long-established market gardens and orchards, producing fruit and vegetables that supply Canberra's markets — a tradition dating back to early European settlement. The iconic Pialligo Estate, a working farm turned boutique winery, wedding and events venue set among ancient olive trees, has become a popular destination for Canberrans and visitors alike. The locality's proximity to the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve adds a natural attraction for birdwatchers and walkers. Residents enjoy a tranquil semi-rural lifestyle with the full amenities of Canberra's inner east just minutes away.
Pialligo falls under postcode 2609 and is governed by Unincorporated ACT Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Kurrajong electorate.
