About Poowong East
Poowong East is a small rural locality in the South Gippsland Shire of southeastern Victoria, situated in the western Strzelecki Ranges approximately 93 kilometres southeast of Melbourne. Covering around 25 square kilometres, the locality had a population of 88 residents at the 2021 Census across 35 private dwellings. It lies east of the small dairy township of Poowong and shares the same rolling hills, lush farmland, and creek-lined gullies characteristic of South Gippsland's productive agricultural hinterland. Poowong East is part of the Narracan state electoral district and the federal electorate of Monash.
Dairy farming has been the backbone of this locality since the late nineteenth century, when South Gippsland's rich volcanic soils were opened up for settlement. The broader Poowong area is known for its small community, picturesque countryside, and a remnant heritage butter factory that reflects the district's dairying legacy. Residents access everyday needs in Poowong and Korumburra — around 13 kilometres to the southeast — which serves as the main service town for the district with supermarkets, schools, and medical facilities. Leongatha, approximately 21 kilometres to the southeast, provides additional services. Melbourne is reachable in roughly two hours by car via the South Gippsland Highway.
Poowong East falls under postcode 3988 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narracan (Eastern Victoria) electorate.
