About Popanyinning
Popanyinning is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, situated in the Shire of Cuballing along the Great Southern Highway between Pingelly and Narrogin, approximately 173 kilometres south-east of Perth. The name means 'water hole' in the local Noongar language and was first recorded in 1869 near the Hotham River. The first settlers arrived in 1893, primarily as railway construction workers, and Popanyinning became one of the original sidings on the Great Southern Railway. With a population of 208 spread across 186 square kilometres of typical Wheatbelt farming country, it is one of many small service towns in this productive agricultural region.
Life in Popanyinning centres on agriculture, particularly wheat and sheep farming, with the wide open Wheatbelt landscape defining the flat, sun-drenched character of the area. The nearby town of Pingelly, approximately 17 kilometres away, provides essential services including a school, medical clinic, and retail. Residents enjoy a quiet rural lifestyle with the Great Southern Highway offering straightforward access to Narrogin to the south and Perth to the north. The community maintains a strong connection to the land and the agricultural traditions that have shaped the region since the late nineteenth century.
Popanyinning falls under postcode 6309 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Central Wheatbelt (Agricultural) electorate.
