About Port Rickaby
Port Rickaby is a small coastal locality on the western shore of Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, situated approximately 195 kilometres west of Adelaide and 16 kilometres north-west of Minlaton, within the Yorke Peninsula Council area. With a 2021 Census population of 69 permanent residents, Port Rickaby is primarily a holiday destination, with a large proportion of its 29 dwellings used as holiday homes and shacks by visitors from Adelaide and regional South Australia. The township sits among coastal sand dunes fronting the Spencer Gulf, giving it a remote and tranquil character that draws visitors throughout the warmer months.
Port Rickaby has a rich maritime history dating back to 1876, when it was established as a grain shipping port named after Thomas Rickaby; at its peak, up to nine ketches were moored simultaneously at the jetty, which was once three times its current length. Today the historic jetty remains a popular spot for fishing, and a sheltered, shallow bay guarded by north and south reefs creates a safe sandy swimming beach that is ideal for families with young children. The locality forms part of the Walk the Yorke trail network, with sections heading north towards Port Victoria and south toward Point Turton, making it a popular base for bushwalkers and nature lovers.
Port Rickaby falls under postcode 5575 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
