About Preservation Bay
Preservation Bay is a small coastal locality on Tasmania's north-west coast, situated within the Central Coast local government area approximately 16 kilometres north-west of Ulverstone. With a population of just 100 residents at the 2021 Census, it is a quiet, low-density settlement nestled between the waters of Bass Strait to the north and the Bass Highway to the south. First settled by Europeans in 1852, the locality retains a relaxed, seaside character with a mix of modest homes backing onto the old railway line and coastal foreshore.
The centrepiece of the locality is its 700-metre north-facing beach, a sheltered curve of sand between low rocky bluffs that is popular with locals for swimming and beachcombing. The Central Coast Council has recently upgraded beach access with new stairs at Preservation Bay for safer foreshore access. The nearby town of Ulverstone provides all essential services including supermarkets, schools, and medical facilities, while the Bass Highway offers a direct route to Devonport and Burnie.
Preservation Bay falls under postcode 7316 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Braddon (Montgomery) electorate.
