About Redmond
Redmond is a rural locality in the City of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, located approximately 399 kilometres south-south-east of Perth and 26 kilometres north-west of Albany. The town's origins date to 1912 when a railway siding was opened in the area — initially known as Mulikupp — and it was gazetted as a townsite in 1916, reportedly named in honour of Irish Nationalist leader John Edward Redmond. With a population of 208 spread across 121 square kilometres at an elevation of 94 metres, Redmond is set amid rolling farmland and timber country in the Great Southern.
Redmond sits within easy reach of Albany, the major regional centre of the Great Southern, which provides residents with full access to hospitals, schools, shopping centres, and the iconic coastal attractions of King George Sound. The Albany Highway links the locality to both Albany to the south and Perth to the north. The area has a history tied to agriculture and timber — a sawmill was established along Albany Highway in the early settlement era — and today retains a peaceful rural character that appeals to those wanting space without sacrificing access to a substantial regional city.
Redmond falls under postcode 6327 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Albany (South West) electorate.
