About Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill is a residential suburb of Charters Towers city in the Charters Towers Region of Queensland, situated approximately 1.9 kilometres north of the Charters Towers CBD and 136 kilometres south-west of Townsville. With a population of 2,453 at the 2021 Census and a median age of 39, it is a family-oriented suburb with a median household income of $1,297 per week. Unlike the mining-oriented areas of Charters Towers, Richmond Hill was deliberately planned as a residential precinct from its earliest settlement, set apart from the gold-mining activity that shaped the wider city.
Richmond Hill has a long educational tradition, with Catholic schooling established in the area as early as 1876 when St Columba's Primary School was founded by the Sisters of Mercy. The suburb offers a relaxed suburban lifestyle within easy reach of Charters Towers city centre, which retains much of its impressive Victorian-era gold rush architecture and heritage streetscapes. Residents enjoy the dry tropical climate of the Charters Towers region and are within comfortable driving distance of Townsville's full range of urban amenities, healthcare, and the coast.
Richmond Hill falls under postcode 4820 and is governed by Charters Towers Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
