About Risdon
Risdon is a small historic locality on the eastern bank of the Derwent River in southern Tasmania, situated approximately 12 kilometres north of Hobart's CBD within the City of Clarence. Covering around 12.6 square kilometres, it had a 2021 census population of 209 residents. The locality derives its name from Captain William Bellamy Risdon, second officer of the Duke of Clarence during Sir John Hayes' 1793 expedition, and is closely linked to the very first British attempt to settle Van Diemen's Land in 1803 when Lieutenant John Bowen anchored at Risdon Cove with 48 free settlers.
Risdon's greatest drawcard is its profound historical significance — Risdon Cove Historic Site preserves the location of that pioneering 1803 settlement, drawing history enthusiasts and school groups from across Tasmania. The Risdon Post Office opened in 1864, and the nearby suburb of Risdon Vale grew around it in the post-war era. Today, residents enjoy a quiet riverside setting with bush reserves, river access, and proximity to the amenities of Hobart's eastern shore suburbs. The area attracts those who value history, semi-rural tranquillity, and easy access to the city.
Risdon falls under postcode 7017 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Rumney) electorate.
