About Rokeby

Rokeby is a suburb of Hobart located on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, approximately 10 km south-east of the Hobart CBD, within the City of Clarence local government area. With a population of around 4,211 (2021 census), it is one of the larger eastern shore suburbs and has historically been associated with public housing developed in the 1970s. The suburb traces its roots to Rokeby House, a colonial farmhouse established in the early 19th century on what was then known as Clarence Plains. In recent decades, Rokeby has undergone gradual demographic change with an increasing mix of long-term residents and newer owner-occupiers attracted by relatively affordable property prices.

Rokeby offers everyday conveniences through its local shopping strip along Rokeby Road, with supermarkets, takeaways, and service businesses serving the surrounding community. The suburb is close to Lauderdale Beach and Ralphs Bay Conservation Area, providing recreational options for residents. Nearby Clarence High School and several primary schools make it a practical choice for families on a budget. The suburb is also close to Eastlands Shopping Centre at Rosny Park, the eastern shore's main retail hub, accessible by a short drive or bus.

Rokeby falls under postcode 7019 and is governed by Clarence Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Franklin (Rumney) electorate.
