About Roland
Roland is a small rural locality in the Kentish Council area of north-west Tasmania, situated in the picturesque foothills of Mount Roland approximately 5 kilometres south-west of Sheffield and around 30 kilometres south of Devonport. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 88 residents across roughly 13.5 square kilometres of farmland and bushland. The locality sits within one of Tasmania's most scenic farming regions, with dairy grazing, beef and lamb production underpinning the local rural economy.
Roland's defining feature is its dramatic natural backdrop — Mount Roland rises to 1,233 metres above sea level and towers over the surrounding green pastures, making it one of the most recognisable natural landmarks in north-west Tasmania. The nearby town of Sheffield, known as the Town of Murals, provides day-to-day services including shops, cafes and community facilities, and is a popular tourist destination in its own right. Devonport, with its Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, hospitals and major retail, is accessible in around 30 minutes by car, and the Mount Roland Conservation Area offers rewarding bushwalking for nature enthusiasts.
Roland falls under postcode 7306 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
