About Rushy Lagoon
Rushy Lagoon is a remote rural locality in the Dorset Council area of north-eastern Tasmania, situated approximately 81 kilometres north-east of Scottsdale near the Bass Strait coastline. Gazetted as a locality in 1968, the area covers more than 207 square kilometres of pastoral land and coastal terrain. The 2021 census recorded just 29 residents, reflecting its character as one of Australia's most sparsely settled communities. The locality is notable for hosting one of the largest farming properties in Tasmania, with extensive dairy, beef, and sheep operations across the surrounding plains.
Rushy Lagoon's landscape is defined by sweeping coastal farmland, wetlands, and proximity to the wild shores of the Tasman Sea. The region is managed predominantly as large-scale agricultural land, and visitors are drawn by excellent birdwatching, fishing, and the raw natural beauty of Tasmania's remote north-east. Access is via unsealed rural roads, and the nearest significant town for services and supplies is Scottsdale, roughly an hour and a half by road. The area appeals to those seeking genuine solitude, working farm experiences, and Tasmania's spectacular coastal wilderness.
Rushy Lagoon falls under postcode 7264 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (McIntyre) electorate.
