About Salmon Gums
Salmon Gums is a small locality and town in the Shire of Esperance within Western Australia's Goldfields-Esperance region, located approximately 106 kilometres north of Esperance and 780 kilometres east-south-east of Perth. The locality is named after the distinctive salmon gum trees (Eucalyptus salmonophloia) that grow throughout the area, characterised by their smooth pink-orange bark. According to the 2021 Census, Salmon Gums had a population of 146 residents spread across a vast 2,781 square kilometres of wheat belt and mallee scrubland at an elevation of 249 metres.
Established in 1925, Salmon Gums developed as an agricultural service locality for the surrounding wheat and cereal cropping farms, which remain the dominant land use across the region. The township has basic facilities, while Esperance — the nearest major town — provides the closest hospitals, schools, supermarkets, and services for local residents. Salmon Gums is entirely car-dependent, with the South Coast Highway connecting it to Esperance to the south and Norseman to the north, and there is no public transport service to the locality.
Salmon Gums falls under postcode 6445 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
