About Seisia
Seisia is a small coastal town and locality at the very tip of Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, forming part of the Northern Peninsula Area Region. Sitting approximately 1,004 kilometres north-north-west of Cairns, it is the most northerly mainland community in Queensland, positioned on the shores of the Torres Strait. The locality covers just 2.3 square kilometres and had a population of 293 at the 2021 Census, primarily an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community within the Seisia Island DOGIT area granted in 1986.
Seisia serves as a key gateway to the Torres Strait, operating a harbour used by supply vessels and the Peddell's Ferry service linking Cape York to Thursday Island, with the 90-minute ferry crossing the only regular public connection to the island hub. The area is a popular destination for adventurous travellers completing the Cape York Peninsula 4WD journey, offering camping, fishing, and the chance to stand at the northernmost tip of mainland Australia. Life in Seisia is remote and community-centred, with most goods and services arriving by supply vessel or sourced in Bamaga, 5.6 kilometres to the south-east.
Seisia falls under postcode 4876 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Cook electorate.
