About Sherlock
Sherlock is a vast pastoral locality in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, situated between Karratha and Port Hedland. Covering an enormous area of over 6,000 square kilometres, it is one of the largest localities in Australia by land area. The locality is named after the Sherlock River and sits in the arid, red-earth landscape characteristic of the Pilbara, with virtually no permanent population outside of pastoral station operations.
Sherlock is defined by its harsh, remote Pilbara landscape of spinifex grasslands, red ranges, and dry riverbeds. The area supports pastoral cattle stations and has proximity to major iron ore mining operations in the broader Pilbara region. There are no services, shops, or facilities — the nearest towns are Karratha (approximately 80 km southwest) and Roebourne (60 km west). The locality is traversed by the North West Coastal Highway and is occasionally visited by outback travellers and mining workers.
Sherlock falls under postcode 6714 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Pilbara (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
