About Somerset Dam
Somerset Dam is a small rural locality and township in the Somerset Region of South East Queensland, situated approximately 115 kilometres north-west of Brisbane and 80 kilometres north of Ipswich within the Somerset Regional Council area. The locality takes its name from the Somerset Dam, a mass concrete gravity dam across the Stanley River that impounds Lake Somerset and forms a centrepiece of the community. With a 2021 Census population of 78 residents spread across around 22 square kilometres, Somerset Dam is a quiet lakeside settlement popular with visitors and home to a small permanent residential community. The Somerset Region is governed from the town of Esk, approximately 25 kilometres to the west.
Lake Somerset is the locality’s defining feature and a major recreational drawcard for South East Queensland, offering 30 kilometres of navigable waterway for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing, and swimming. Designated recreation areas at Kirkleagh, The Spit, Somerset Park, and Westvale provide day-use facilities, while camping and caravan sites can accommodate up to 2,200 campers at Kirkleagh. The lake is regarded as one of Queensland’s top five freshwater fishing destinations, attracting anglers year-round. Somerset Dam suits those seeking a lifestyle centred on the water, with Brisbane and Ipswich accessible within an hour or two for those who need urban services.
Somerset Dam falls under postcode 4312 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Nanango electorate.
