About Southport
Southport is a small historic township in far southern Tasmania, situated within the Huon Valley Council area approximately 96 kilometres south-west of Hobart via the Huon Highway (A6). With a population of 149 at the 2021 Census, Southport is one of the most remote townships in the state and among the southernmost permanently inhabited settlements in Australia. The area covers approximately 34.5 square kilometres of forested coastal terrain, with a median household income near the Tasmanian average.
Settled in 1837, Southport grew to become the largest town south of Hobart before declining as timber and maritime industries contracted over the twentieth century. Today it retains a quiet, remote character, offering direct access to the Hartz Mountains National Park, the Southern Ocean coastline, and the scenic Hastings Caves and thermal pool area nearby. The nearest town with regular services is Dover, approximately 20 kilometres to the north. Southport appeals to those who value extreme remoteness, natural beauty, and the southernmost reaches of Tasmania's wild southern coastline.
Southport falls under postcode 7109 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Derwent) electorate.
