About Spalding
Spalding is a small rural town located north of the renowned Clare Valley wine region in South Australia, approximately 130 kilometres north of Adelaide. Falling within the Northern Areas Council local government area, the town sits at an elevation of around 290 metres on a large locality spanning almost 184 square kilometres of farming country. With a population of approximately 260 residents, Spalding is principally a farming community serving the surrounding pastoral and cropping district of the Mid North.
The town offers a modest set of local services including a supermarket, hotel, school, roadhouse, and a notable slate quarry that has long been part of its local economy. Spalding is well positioned for day trips to Clare — with its celebrated wineries, art galleries, and dining — as well as to Burra, Jamestown, and Crystal Brook. The surrounding countryside and proximity to the Flinders Ranges make it popular with travellers passing through on outback routes, and it retains the quiet character and community spirit typical of South Australia's Mid North towns.
Spalding falls under postcode 5454 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Frome electorate.
