About St Kilda
St Kilda is a small coastal locality situated approximately 21 kilometres north-north-west of the Adelaide CBD, within the City of Salisbury local government area. With a 2021 Census population of 88, it is one of the more unusual localities on the northern fringe of Adelaide — low-lying, flat, and almost entirely surrounded by the Barker Inlet estuary and Gulf St Vincent mangroves. Residential dwellings are sparse, and the suburb is connected to the wider road network by a single 4-kilometre access road, giving it a distinctly semi-isolated character.
St Kilda is best known as a family day-trip destination, home to the award-winning St Kilda Adventure Playground — featuring a castle, flying fox and pirate ship — and the Adelaide Tramway Museum, which operates restored historic electric trams along a purpose-built track between the museum and the playground. The St Kilda Mangrove Trail and Interpretive Centre provides a 2-kilometre boardwalk through one of the largest tidal mangrove forests in the Adelaide region, and the area is internationally recognised for birdwatching, with over 100 species recorded in the surrounding mudflats, salt lagoons and seagrass beds of the Barker Inlet.
St Kilda falls under postcode 5110 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Taylor electorate.
