About Stansbury
Stansbury is a small coastal town on the south-eastern shore of Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, governed by the Yorke Peninsula Council and situated approximately 204 kilometres west of Adelaide. With a population of 603 residents spread across 60.8 square kilometres, the town faces Gulf St Vincent across Oyster Bay — a feature that shaped its early economy as a port for the export of wheat and barley to Adelaide. Originally known as Oyster Bay, the town was proclaimed Stansbury in 1873 in honour of a friend of Governor Anthony Musgrave.
Stansbury offers a relaxed seaside lifestyle and was voted South Australia's tidiest town in 2009. Visitors and residents enjoy the picturesque foreshore, the town's historic jetty with a permanently moored swimming pontoon, and the popular Stansbury Seaside Market held on Saturday mornings from mid-autumn to mid-spring. The local economy is anchored by broadacre cereal cropping, and the town is home to two caravan parks, holiday motels, and the Dalrymple Hotel. The surrounding landscape, proximity to Gulf St Vincent waters, and the nearby Dalrymple ESCRI battery (a notable renewable energy installation) add to Stansbury's unique character on the Yorke Peninsula.
Stansbury falls under postcode 5582 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Narungga electorate.
