About Stephenston
Stephenston is a gazetted locality in South Australia's Flinders Ranges region, positioned approximately 285 km north of Adelaide and 15 km east of the historic town of Quorn. Originally surveyed as a Government Town in the mid-19th century within the Hundred of Palmer, the locality covers a substantial 190 sq km of outback terrain typical of the central Flinders Ranges, with annual rainfall of only 270 mm. The 2021 census recorded no permanent residents, confirming Stephenston's status as an uninhabited locality — a remnant administrative boundary that once held aspirations for a permanent township. The area falls within the Division of Grey federally and the state electorate of Stuart.
While Stephenston itself is uninhabited, the surrounding Flinders Ranges landscape is one of Australia's most spectacular, drawing tourists, bushwalkers, and four-wheel-drive enthusiasts from across the country. Quorn, just 15 km to the west, is a heritage railway town and the gateway to the Flinders Ranges National Park and the iconic Pichi Richi Railway. The broader region offers rugged gorges, ancient geology, Aboriginal cultural sites, and clear outback skies that make it a destination for stargazers and nature lovers. Stephenston's land is used primarily for pastoral grazing under its harsh but beautiful semi-arid conditions.
Stephenston falls under postcode 5433 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Stuart electorate.
