About Stockport
Stockport is a small historic farming locality on the southern boundary of the Clare & Gilbert Valleys Council area in South Australia, situated approximately 73 kilometres north of Adelaide and 15 kilometres south of Tarlee. Covering nearly 61 square kilometres, the locality had a population of 272 at the 2021 Census and is one of South Australia's earliest European settlements, established in 1845 by Samuel Stocks and named after his birthplace of Stockport in Cheshire, England. The area is characterised by open agricultural farmland and rolling countryside typical of South Australia's mid-north region.
Stockport sits on the southern fringe of the renowned Clare Valley wine region, placing residents within easy reach of boutique wineries, cellar doors, and the beloved Riesling Trail — a scenic cycling and walking path that winds through the valley. The nearby township of Tarlee provides basic local services, while Clare, approximately 35 kilometres to the north, offers schools, medical facilities, and shopping. The peaceful countryside setting, rich agricultural heritage, and convenient access to both the wine country and the Adelaide metropolitan area make Stockport an appealing choice for those seeking affordable rural acreage living.
