About Storm King
Storm King is a rural locality in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, situated approximately 10 kilometres south-east of Stanthorpe on the road to Eukey. Covering around 20 square kilometres in the Granite Belt highlands, the locality is notable for containing Storm King Dam — the sole urban water supply reservoir for Stanthorpe. The 2021 Census recorded a population of 106 residents, reflecting the area's sparse rural and semi-rural residential character.
Storm King Dam, built in 1954 by the then-Stanthorpe Shire Council, impounds Quart Pot Creek and sits within a picturesque rural setting that attracts visitors for picnicking, fishing, swimming, and water sports. The dam's scenic surroundings draw locals and tourists alike, and the area features amenities including a boat ramp, jetty, barbecues, and a playground. The locality's west is mountainous and largely undeveloped, while the flatter eastern section supports rural residential properties and hobby farms. Stanthorpe, the nearest town, provides residents with supermarkets, schools, medical services, and transport connections into the broader Southern Downs and Granite Belt wine country.
Storm King falls under postcode 4380 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
