About Taldora
Taldora is a remote outback locality in the Shire of McKinlay, far north-west Queensland, approximately 1,500 kilometres north-west of Brisbane. With a population of just 78 residents at the 2021 Census, it is one of the most sparsely settled areas in the state, covering a vast 13,204 square kilometres of arid grazing country along Spear Creek. The locality is accessed via the Wills Developmental Road and is centred around the historic Taldora Station, a cattle property with origins dating back to at least 1866.
Life in Taldora revolves around the cattle industry and the rhythms of outback living. The nearest town with essential services is Julia Creek to the south, which provides schooling, fuel, and supplies. There is no public transport, mobile coverage is limited, and residents rely on private vehicles and road trains for access. The surrounding landscape of open plains, seasonal creeks, and vast skies appeals to those drawn to a self-sufficient, remote pastoral lifestyle far from urban centres.
Taldora falls under postcode 4823 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Traeger electorate.
