About Talgai
Talgai is a sparsely settled rural locality in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, covering approximately 71 square kilometres west of Warwick. The locality lies in the Condamine River catchment, with the Dalrymple Creek traversing Talgai Station, and is situated roughly 43 kilometres west of Warwick near the small township of Pratten. At the 2021 Census, Talgai recorded a population of 106 residents, consistent with its character as open grazing and farming country with very low residential density.
Talgai has a notable historical legacy — in 1864 the area supported alluvial and reef gold mining at the Talgai field (also known as Darkey's Flat), and the locality is internationally recognised for the discovery of an ancient Aboriginal fossil skull of significant paleoanthropological importance. Today the land is used predominantly for grazing, with the nearby Talgai Weir on the Condamine River offering a popular and secluded paddling trail for kayakers and canoeists. The nearest services are found at Allora to the east and Clifton to the north, while Warwick provides full regional amenities including supermarkets, schools, and medical facilities within a 40-50 minute drive.
Talgai falls under postcode 4362 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Southern Downs electorate.
