About Tambellup
Tambellup is a small agricultural townsite in Western Australia's Great Southern region, located 317 kilometres south-east of Perth on the Great Southern Highway where it crosses the Gordon River, 23 kilometres south of Broomehill. The townsite falls within the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup and had a population of 281 residents in the 2021 Census. It is set amid the productive grain and sheep farming country of the Great Southern, with the surrounding district supporting a mix of cropping and pastoral operations that have shaped the community since the late 1800s.
Tambellup was officially gazetted as a townsite in 1899, following the arrival of the Great Southern Railway in 1889, which transformed the locality into a regional service hub for surrounding farms. Today the town retains its quiet rural character, offering essential services including accommodation and a caravan park for passing travellers on the Great Southern Highway. The Tambellup Heritage Trail allows visitors to explore the townsite's historic sites, while the surrounding wheatbelt landscape and bushland provide opportunities for birdwatching and scenic drives through the Great Southern.
Tambellup falls under postcode 6320 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Roe (Agricultural) electorate.
