About Tambo
Tambo is a small rural town and locality in the Blackall-Tambo Region of outback Queensland, situated approximately 863 kilometres north-west of Brisbane on the Barcoo River. Established in 1863, it is one of the oldest towns in central Queensland, with a population of around 318 people spread across its vast 617 square kilometre locality. The town serves as an administrative centre for the surrounding pastoral district, with a character shaped by generations of cattle farming and the wide, open Mitchell Grass plains of the Channel Country.
Life in Tambo revolves around its tight-knit agricultural community, with residents relying on the town's essential services including a hotel, general store, and medical clinic. The town is known for its iconic Tambo Teddy Bears — handcrafted toy bears made from natural sheepskin — which have become a beloved local industry and tourist attraction. Visitors and locals alike appreciate the area's authentic outback experience, stargazing opportunities, and proximity to the Great Artesian Basin. The town is accessible via the Landsborough Highway.
