About Taranna
Taranna is a small historic settlement on the Tasman Peninsula in south-eastern Tasmania, located approximately 89 kilometres south-east of Hobart along the Arthur Highway within the Tasman Council area. The locality sits just 10 kilometres north of the renowned Port Arthur Historic Site and covers nearly 19 square kilometres of coastal and forested land. With a population of 167 at the 2021 Census, Taranna is one of Tasmania's smallest inhabited localities, retaining a quiet character shaped by its deep convict-era heritage.
Taranna is home to the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park, a popular wildlife sanctuary where visitors can observe Tasmanian devils, quolls, and a range of native birds up close. The locality holds significant historical importance — in 1836, Australia's first tramway was established between Taranna and Port Arthur, propelled by convict labour. A picturesque historic Presbyterian church and easy access to the dramatic coastlines of Tasman National Park make Taranna a compelling base for visitors and a tranquil haven for those drawn to remote coastal living.
Taranna falls under postcode 7180 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Prosser) electorate.
