About Taroona

Taroona is a leafy residential suburb situated 10 kilometres south of Hobart's CBD along the western shore of the River Derwent in the municipality of Kingborough. With a population of around 3,100, the suburb is named from the Mouheneener Aboriginal word for chiton, a marine mollusc found on the local foreshore. Taroona is characterised by its elevated, bushy blocks, many with sweeping river views, and a demographic skewing towards professionals and established families.

The suburb offers a tranquil, nature-oriented lifestyle with several beaches including Taroona Beach and Hinsby Beach, walking tracks along the dramatic Alum Cliffs, and the historic Taroona Shot Tower. While there is limited local retail, the highly regarded Taroona High School and strong community networks make it popular with families. Residents enjoy a 15-to-20-minute drive or bus ride into Hobart, combining suburban serenity with easy access to the capital's dining, culture, and employment.

Taroona falls under postcode 7053 and is governed by Kingborough Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Clark (Nelson) electorate.
