About Terowie
Terowie is a small historic town in the Mid North region of South Australia, situated 220 kilometres north of Adelaide at an elevation of 534 metres within the Regional Council of Goyder. With a population of 135 at the 2021 Census, it occupies a large area of 169 square kilometres on the pastoral plains near Peterborough and Burra. Terowie has been declared a historic town by the South Australian government, recognised for its exceptional collection of authentic 1880s heritage buildings.
Founded in the 1870s as a transport hub at the junction of broad- and narrow-gauge railway lines, Terowie retains heritage-listed buildings including the railway station, hotel, general store, and the ES&A Bank building along its main street. The town draws photographers, historians, and railway enthusiasts, and is notable as the location where General Douglas MacArthur delivered his famous speech pledging to return to the Philippines in 1942. Services are limited in the town itself, with nearby Peterborough (24 kilometres to the north-west) providing more comprehensive facilities.
