About Thoona
Thoona is a small rural town in north-eastern Victoria, situated within the Rural City of Benalla local government area, approximately 247 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 28 kilometres north of Benalla. With a 2021 Census population of 133 residents spread across roughly 80 square kilometres of farming land, Thoona is a quiet agricultural locality set on the edge of a small hill — the meaning of its Aboriginal name. The surrounding landscape is defined by grazing country, with the Warby Ranges visible around 5 kilometres to the east.
Thoona holds a proud place in the history of north-east Victoria as home to the first co-operative butter factory in the region, a testament to its farming heritage. Today, the town retains its rural character with a small community connected to the nearby towns of Benalla and Wangaratta for schools, shopping, and services. Each March, Thoona draws visitors from across the state for its Victorian Wheelie Bin Championships, a quirky community tradition that keeps the locality on the map.
Thoona falls under postcode 3726 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
