Tingha is a small historic town on the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales, located within Inverell Shire approximately 30 kilometres south of Inverell and 559 kilometres north-north-east of Sydney. Sitting at an elevation of 780 metres, the locality spans a large 270 square kilometre area and had a population of 774 at the 2021 Census. The town was established in 1885 and its Aboriginal name translates to 'flat or level', referencing the tablelands terrain.
Tingha has a rich multicultural and indigenous heritage shaped by the tin mining boom of the 1870s, which attracted thousands of settlers including around 1,000 Chinese miners. The Wing Hing Long Museum, housed in an 1880s Chinese general store, preserves this fascinating history and is a notable local landmark. The town retains a close-knit rural character with basic local services, while the surrounding tablelands offer fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities. A car is essential for accessing broader regional services in Inverell.
