About Torrita
Torrita is a small rural locality in north-western Victoria, located within the Mallee region near Ouyen in the Mildura Rural City local government area. It shares postcode 3490 with the nearby town of Ouyen and the localities of Boinka, Kulwin and Tutye. The landscape is characterised by flat mallee scrubland and dryland cropping farms, typical of this semi-arid corner of Victoria. The population is extremely small, with just 18 residents recorded in the 2016 census, reflecting the sparse settlement of this agricultural hinterland.
Torrita and its surrounds are home to dryland farmers who primarily grow cereal crops and raise livestock across large pastoral holdings. The nearby town of Ouyen (postcode 3490) provides the essential services for residents, including a supermarket, health clinic, primary school and the Ouyen Hotel. The Mallee Highway connects the area to Mildura in the north-west (approximately 160 km) and to the Murray River towns to the east. The region is popular with birdwatchers and nature lovers, as the surrounding Murray–Sunset National Park and Hattah–Kulkyne National Park protect significant mallee ecosystems.
Torrita falls under postcode 3490 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
