About Tragowel
Tragowel is a small farming locality in the Shire of Gannawarra in north-west Victoria, situated approximately 15 kilometres south of Kerang and 267 kilometres north-north-west of Melbourne. The locality covers a substantial 128 square kilometres of flat irrigated plains on the western Loddon Valley, recording a population of 83 in the 2021 Census. Tragowel Plains have a long history of irrigation farming supported by the Tragowel Plains Irrigation Trust, established in 1886.
The area is dominated by dairy farming, mixed cropping, and pastoral operations across the flat, irrigated landscape that characterises the broader Loddon Campaspe region. Residents rely on Kerang for everyday services including supermarkets, schools, and health facilities, while the Loddon Valley Highway provides access to Bendigo and regional connections. Tragowel has historical significance as the site of a stop made by the Burke and Wills expedition in 1860, adding a notable chapter to the locality's pastoral heritage.
Tragowel falls under postcode 3579 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
