About Tyntynder
Tyntynder is a rural locality in north-west Victoria, situated approximately 10 kilometres north of Swan Hill within the Swan Hill Rural City Council area. Lying in the flat irrigation district along the Murray River floodplain, the locality covers around 32.6 square kilometres of agricultural land and recorded a population of 157 at the 2021 census. European settlement here dates to 1846 when the Tyntyndyer pastoral run was taken up, making it one of the earliest European settlements in the Swan Hill district.
Tyntynder's economy and identity have long been shaped by irrigated agriculture, with dairying, piggeries, horticulture, and historically rice and citrus production forming the backbone of the local industry. The heritage-listed Tyntyndyer Homestead, located about 16 kilometres north of Swan Hill, is a significant colonial landmark open for inspection and a reminder of the locality's pioneering pastoral past. Residents depend on Swan Hill — just 10 kilometres to the south — for all major services including schools, hospitals, supermarkets, and transport connections, including rail services to Melbourne.
Tyntynder falls under postcode 3586 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Murray Plains (Northern Victoria) electorate.
