About Ulan
Ulan is a small rural locality situated in the Central West region of New South Wales, approximately 45 kilometres north-east of Mudgee and 280 kilometres north-west of Sydney. The locality falls within the Mid-Western Regional Council area and covers a substantial 295 square kilometres of open farmland and bushland in the Goulburn River catchment. With a 2021 Census population of 81 residents, Ulan is a quietly settled community whose economy has long been shaped by coal mining operations in the surrounding area.
Ulan Coal Mine, operated by Glencore, is one of New South Wales's longest-running coal mining operations and remains a significant local employer, comprising underground mining operations that have been active since the 1920s. The Sandy Hollow–Ulan Railway was constructed to serve the mine and later extended to Gulgong. Residents rely on the larger town of Mudgee for everyday services including supermarkets, schools, and healthcare, while the Mudgee wine region and Goulburn River National Park provide recreational opportunities for those living in the locality.
Ulan falls under postcode 2850 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Upper Hunter electorate.
