About Upper Castra
Upper Castra is a small rural locality in the Central Coast Council area of north-west Tasmania, situated approximately 23 kilometres south of the coastal town of Ulverstone in the hinterland hills above the Castra Road corridor. Covering around 34 square kilometres, the locality had a population of 85 at the 2021 Census, with most residents living on rural properties spread across the rolling hillsides. The name Castra derives from the Latin word for camp and Upper Castra is so named as it lies further inland than the neighbouring locality of Castra.
The locality is set amid the lush green hills of the north-west Tasmanian hinterland, an area known for dairy farming, market gardening, and scenic rural landscapes. Residents rely on the town of Ulverstone, about 23 kilometres to the north, for everyday services including shopping, schooling, and medical care, while Devonport is the nearest major regional centre approximately 30 kilometres to the north-east. Upper Castra suits those drawn to a quiet, self-sufficient rural lifestyle among some of Tasmania's most productive and picturesque hill country.
Upper Castra falls under postcode 7315 and is governed by Central Coast Council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Lyons (Montgomery) electorate.
