About Upper Lurg
Upper Lurg is a small rural locality in the Hume region of northeast Victoria, situated approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Benalla within the Benalla Rural City. Covering around 31 square kilometres, it sits in the foothills where the flat plains of the Broken River valley rise toward the Strathbogie Ranges. The locality has a long pastoral history and was part of the broader Lurg district known for its association with the Kelly Gang era.
Upper Lurg is a peaceful farming area of green rolling hills, scattered with granite boulders and shaded by established eucalypts. The district supports sheep and cattle grazing and some viticulture, benefiting from the reliable rainfall of the lower ranges. Residents travel to Benalla for shopping, schools, and services. The area offers beautiful rural scenery, proximity to the Strathbogie Ranges for bushwalking, and a strong sense of community among its small population of farming families.
Upper Lurg falls under postcode 3673 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ovens Valley (Northern Victoria) electorate.
