About Urrbrae

Urrbrae is an inner-southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, located just 5.6 kilometres southeast of the Adelaide CBD in the City of Mitcham. With a population of around 1,070 (2021 census), it sits at the foot of the Adelaide Hills, bordered on the east by the South Eastern Freeway. The suburb was named by Robert Forsyth Macgeorge in the 1850s after the Scottish village Haugh of Urr, with "brae" meaning hillside. The historic Old Toll House marks the traditional entrance to Adelaide from the hills.

Urrbrae is home to several prestigious institutions, including the Waite Institute (part of the University of Adelaide) and Urrbrae Agricultural High School, giving the suburb a distinctly academic and pastoral character. The Waite Arboretum and Waite Conservation Reserve offer beautiful green spaces. Despite its proximity to the CBD, Urrbrae maintains a leafy, semi-rural feel with established gardens and heritage properties. The suburb appeals to professionals, academics, and families seeking a prestigious inner-city address with a village atmosphere.

Urrbrae falls under postcode 5064 and is governed by Mitcham Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Unley electorate.
