About Violet Town
Violet Town is a historic small town in northeastern Victoria, located 174 kilometres northeast of Melbourne on the Hume Highway in the Shire of Strathbogie. Sitting on Honeysuckle Creek, the town had a population of 936 at the 2021 Census and serves travellers and the surrounding rural community. It is one of Victoria's earliest surveyed inland towns, with origins dating to an 1838 New South Wales government survey that originally named the site "Violet Creek".
The town is characterised by its charming streetscape, with many early streets named after flowers — including Lily Street, Rose Street, Orchid Street, and Tulip Street — lending it a distinctive local identity. Violet Town has a small cluster of local services including a general store, hotel, and primary school, and benefits from its position on the Hume Highway between Euroa (19 kilometres south) and Benalla (27 kilometres northeast). The V/Line regional rail service stops at Violet Town, providing a direct train connection to Melbourne and nearby regional centres.
Violet Town falls under postcode 3669 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Euroa (Northern Victoria) electorate.
