About Walkaway
Walkaway is a small rural town in the City of Greater Geraldton local government area of Western Australia, located approximately 37 kilometres south-east of Geraldton and 398 kilometres north of Perth. With a population of 222, the town spans 113 square kilometres of predominantly agricultural land in the mid-west region of the state. Its name derives from 'Wagga wah', an Aboriginal term referring to a bend in the nearby Greenough River, and was first applied to a railway station established in 1887.
Walkaway has a proud railway heritage — in 1894 it became the junction point for the Midland Railway Company's line linking Geraldton to Perth, which played a key role in opening up the region's wheat belt. Today the town retains a quiet rural character, with surrounding farmland dedicated to grain and livestock production. Residents rely on the nearby city of Geraldton for shopping, healthcare, and secondary education, while the town itself offers a peaceful, community-oriented lifestyle typical of small agricultural towns in Western Australia's mid-west.
Walkaway falls under postcode 6528 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Geraldton (Agricultural) electorate.
