About Wallumbilla South
Wallumbilla South is a vast rural locality in Queensland's Maranoa Region, situated approximately 35 kilometres east of Roma and around 490 kilometres west of Brisbane via the Warrego Highway. Administered by the Maranoa Regional Council, the locality covers an expansive 770 square kilometres of south-west Queensland outback, characterised by a mix of crop growing and grazing on native vegetation. The 2021 Census recorded just 80 residents across this large area, reflecting the sparsely settled nature of the region's pastoral and farming land.
The locality is bounded to the north by the Warrego Highway and Western railway line, while the Roma-Condamine Road (Wallumbilla South Road) traverses its south-western corner, linking the broader region to Roma's services and facilities. Four state forest areas — Wallabella State Forests 1 and 2, Tinowan State Forest, and Yalebone State Forest 1 — provide pockets of protected native vegetation in the south-east of the locality. Wallumbilla South's name derives from a Mandandanji language word believed to mean 'plenty of jew fish', reflecting the deep Indigenous heritage of this part of south-west Queensland.
Wallumbilla South falls under postcode 4428 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
