About Walpeup
Walpeup is a small town in the Mallee region of north-west Victoria, located along the Mallee Highway in the Rural City of Mildura local government area, 458 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 130 kilometres south-west of Mildura. With a population of 171 and spanning an expansive 463 square kilometres of flat, semi-arid Mallee scrubland, it is one of Victoria's most remote and sparsely populated communities. The township was established when the Pinnaroo railway line arrived in the early 1900s, and the area has long been shaped by dryland farming and the challenges of the harsh Mallee environment.
Walpeup is home to the historic Mallee Research Station, established in 1922 to develop dryland farming techniques for the region, and the site also houses a Bureau of Meteorology automatic weather station. The Walpeup Memorial Hall on Glen Street preserves a moving collection of historic photographs and a hand-sewn community tapestry from 1989, honouring locals who served in both World Wars. The Dryland Gardens on Creagan Street showcase an impressive variety of native trees and shrubs, tended by local volunteers, while travellers passing through on the Mallee Highway can stop at the town's wayside rest area and visit the local General Store. Walpeup and neighbouring Underbool have a shared history of Australian rules football in the Mallee Football League.
Walpeup falls under postcode 3507 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Mildura (Northern Victoria) electorate.
