About Wanilla
Wanilla is a small rural locality on the southern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, situated approximately 25 kilometres north-west of the city of Port Lincoln and around 271 kilometres west of Adelaide. The locality falls within the District Council of Lower Eyre Peninsula local government area. With a population of 95 residents according to the 2021 Census, Wanilla covers a substantial 158 square kilometres of Eyre Peninsula farmland. The area was first surveyed as a government town in 1882 and sits within the traditional country of the Nauo peoples.
Wanilla is a quiet agricultural locality surrounded by cereal cropping and grazing land typical of the Eyre Peninsula, with farming remaining the primary economic activity for households in the area. A small community church, dedicated in 1959, and the site of a former school reflect the locality's history as a modest farming settlement. Residents rely on Port Lincoln — one of South Australia's major regional cities — for shopping, schools, health services, and a wide range of urban amenities. Port Lincoln's Spencer Gulf waterfront, seafood industry, and natural attractions are all within a short drive of Wanilla.
Wanilla falls under postcode 5607 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Flinders electorate.
