About Wareek
Wareek is a small rural locality in the Central Goldfields Shire of central Victoria, situated approximately 200 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and around 20 kilometres south of Maryborough. Covering about 66 square kilometres, the area had a 2021 Census population of 72 residents and sits at the boundary of the Central Goldfields and Pyrenees shires in the heart of goldfields country. The landscape is characterised by open farmland, scattered remnant bushland, and the gently undulating terrain typical of the Pyrenees foothills wine district.
Wareek is home to the heritage-listed Norwood Homestead on Norwood Road, a distinctive Gothic Revival house constructed in 1863 and considered one of the most significant historic pastoral properties in Victoria. The nearby Pyrenees wine region, centred on towns like Avoca and Moonambel, draws visitors to the area for cellar doors and rural tourism. Maryborough, around 20 kilometres to the north, serves as the nearest regional centre offering shops, schools, the Maryborough Education Centre, and a V/Line rail connection to Melbourne and Ballarat.
Wareek falls under postcode 3465 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Ripon (Western Victoria) electorate.
