About Watchem
Watchem is a small town in the Shire of Buloke in north-western Victoria, situated on the Sunraysia Highway approximately 307 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 35 kilometres north of Donald. The town lies in the broad Wimmera-Mallee agricultural belt, an area characterised by vast cereal and cropping farms across flat to gently undulating plains. With a population of 124 residents recorded at the 2021 Census, Watchem is a tight-knit farming community that has served the surrounding agricultural district since the late nineteenth century, with its Post Office established in 1889.
One of Watchem's most valued local assets is its lake, a thriving natural water body within walking distance of the town centre that provides recreation for residents and visitors alike. The town maintains community spirit through local sport, including the Birchip-Watchem football team competing in the North Central Football League and the Watchem Panthers cricket club. The neighbouring township of Birchip, around 25 kilometres to the west, and the larger centre of Donald to the south provide additional services, while Horsham — the Wimmera's main regional centre — is about 104 kilometres to the south-west.
