About Windy Harbour
Windy Harbour is a remote coastal locality in the Shire of Manjimup in Western Australia's South West region, situated approximately 27 kilometres south of Northcliffe directly on the Southern Ocean coastline. The locality is almost entirely surrounded by the D'Entrecasteaux National Park, a vast coastal wilderness protecting towering karri and tingle forests, sand plains, coastal heathlands and rugged cliff-lined beaches. With a permanent population of just 30 at the 2021 census, Windy Harbour is primarily a holiday shack settlement whose population swells dramatically during summer and school holidays as visitors arrive to enjoy its wild, pristine beaches. The locality receives over 1,060 millimetres of annual rainfall and experiences a cool, temperate maritime climate shaped by the prevailing Southern Ocean winds that give the area its name.
Windy Harbour offers an exceptionally raw and peaceful coastal escape deep within one of Western Australia's most spectacular national parks, with dramatic ocean-facing beaches, reef fishing, snorkelling and surfing along the untamed coastline. The locality has a boat ramp, basic camping facilities and a small holiday park, but no shops — all supplies must be brought in from Northcliffe (27 km north) or Pemberton (approximately 48 km). The surrounding D'Entrecasteaux National Park offers world-class four-wheel driving, bushwalking through old-growth karri forest, and visits to the remarkable Cathedral Rocks formations on the coastline. The extreme remoteness, natural beauty and strong holiday community tradition make Windy Harbour one of the most sought-after beach shack destinations in the South West.
Windy Harbour falls under postcode 6262 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warren-Blackwood (South West) electorate.
