About Winnaleah
Winnaleah is a small rural township and farming locality in the north-east of Tasmania, situated within the Dorset Council local government area approximately 38 kilometres northeast of Scottsdale and around 105 kilometres east of Launceston. With a population of 225 residents spread across a large 72.5 square kilometre area, the community is centred on the township itself surrounded by productive agricultural and pastoral land. The locality has a notably female-skewed demographic and no recorded median income data, reflecting its remote, largely self-sustaining farming character.
Despite its small size, Winnaleah has a surprisingly solid community infrastructure, including a hotel, post office, produce store, community swimming pool, and a district high school catering to prep through grade 10. A memorial ANZAC bell and community shop add to the civic fabric of this tight-knit village. The surrounding landscape of north-east Tasmania — featuring rolling hills, river flats, and tall forest — draws bushwalkers and nature enthusiasts, while the nearby Tasman Sea coastline at Gladstone and the Blue Derby mountain bike trail network offer outdoor adventure within reasonable driving distance.
Winnaleah falls under postcode 7265 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Bass (McIntyre) electorate.
