About Wubin
Wubin is a small rural town in the northern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, located within the Shire of Dalwallinu approximately 272 kilometres north-northeast of Perth and 21 kilometres north of Dalwallinu. Covering nearly 479 square kilometres, the locality sits at the gateway between the Wheatbelt and the pastoral country further north, and recorded a population of 90 at the 2021 Census. The town's name derives from the Aboriginal name for a nearby water source — Woobin Well — first recorded by a surveyor in 1907, reflecting the deep connection between the country and its Indigenous heritage.
Wubin developed as a railway siding on the Wongan Hills to Mullewa line from 1915, and by 1936 the Co-operative Bulk Handling facility had established grain handling infrastructure that remains central to the local economy today. The Heritage Wheatbin Museum, housed in a heritage-classified 1939 wheatbin, preserves the district's agricultural history through farming artefacts, vintage machinery, and photographic displays. The Wubin Hotel Motel provides accommodation and hospitality for travellers along the Great Northern Highway, which passes through town. Transwa operates a twice-weekly coach service connecting Wubin to Perth, though a car is the primary means of transport for most residents.
Wubin falls under postcode 6612 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the North West Central (Mining and Pastoral) electorate.
