About Wyandra
Wyandra is a small outback town in the Paroo Shire of south-west Queensland, situated on the Warrego River halfway between Cunnamulla and Charleville, approximately 750 kilometres west of Brisbane. With a population of 78 at the 2021 Census and covering over 5,000 square kilometres, it is a quintessential outback settlement surrounded by grazing stations and open mulga country. The town grew with the arrival of the Western railway line from Charleville in 1897 and served as a centre for local pastoral properties.
Wyandra retains a genuine outback character with its heritage trail, the Powerhouse Museum, a local pub, and a post office and store. The Warrego River provides a popular swimming and picnic spot known locally as ‘the beach.’ The railway line through Wyandra is no longer active for passenger services, but the town remains a stopping point for travellers and grey nomads exploring outback Queensland. Overnight camping is available near the post office, and the town’s quiet charm and river setting make it an appealing stopover on the Matilda Way.
Wyandra falls under postcode 4489 and is governed by the local council Council (LGA). For state elections, residents vote in the Warrego electorate.
